Biophysics Week 13: Bionics and our Biophysical Future

I am on the fence about supporting the development of a bionic person because we have no idea what the consequences may be. Shouldn't we be bettering the people of our planet first, before we go on trying to invent new things?

The article about locked-in patients was extremely interesting. ALS is such a sad disease and I really hope one day, something could be done to help the sufferers communicate. Since the $300 headset can be inadequate I think it's pretty dangerous. The results can be extremely misleading and the person with ALS will have no way to say whether the machine is reading their needs inaccurate or not. This seems dangerous. I think anyone who is suffering has the right to choose their own way of dealing with it, so in that way, if they want the machine, they should have it, but it's very important the consumer understands the positive and negative aspects of the headset.
